Activities carried out so far
In fulfillment of its objectives, the Bureau undertook the following activities, in the past:

Rural Surveys Regular Diet and Nutritional assessment surveys were carried out in the rural areas on a continuous basis.

Time Trends Considering the surveys carried out during 1975-79 as baseline, first repeat survey was carried out during 1988-89 and the second repeat survey was carried out during 1996-97, by covering the same villages surveyed at baseline .

Evaluation of Nutrition Intervention programs
  • Applied Nutrition programme in the States of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, and Manipur (1977-78).
  • Vitamin A prophylaxis programme in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Rajasthan, and West Bengal (1977-78).
  • Supplementary Nutrition Programme in Urban Karnataka (1980-81)
  • World Food Programme assisted supplementary Nutrition Programme in Bihar Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal (1981-82)
  • Integrated Child Development Services - Status Appraisal in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa (1992)
  • Impact Evaluation of mid-day meal programme in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka and Kerala (1991-92).
NNMB-NSSO Linked Surveys
NNMB-NSSO linked surveys were carried out during 1993-94 to assess the feasibility of applying the sampling design adopted NSSO in its consumer expenditure surveys to NNMB surveys and to compare the energy intake data of NSSO vis-à-vis energy intakes observed in NNMB surveys in 4 States, namely Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa and Tamil Nadu. The results showed that the linkage of NNMB operation using NSSO sample frame was technically feasible, and that the energy intakes reported by NSSO and that of NNMB were fairly comparable.

Tribal Surveys
Assessment of diet and nutritional status of tribal population living in the ITDA areas in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Orissa and West Bengal, a baseline survey was carried out during 1985-87. In order to study the time trends, first repeat survey was carried out during 1998-99, while the second repeat survey is currently in progress (2006-07).

Drought Surveys
In the year 1987, the Bureau assessed diet and nutritional status in the drought affected areas in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Tamil Nadu. The Bureau carried out similar surveys in the 2000 in the drought affected States of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Another such survey was carried out in 9 States viz. Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu during 2003.

Special Surveys
  • Prevalence of Micronutrient Deficiencies (MND) in the year 2003
  • Assessment of diet and nutritional status of rural population and Prevalence of obesity, hypertension and diabetes (in A.P only) among adult men and NPNL women of rural areas (2005-2006).
